About the Author:
David Stanley Newell
Smiley Newell became a driving instructor in 1989 and worked full time in the unique DTA training system for many years. He built up a substantial following with a number of trucking firms. Returning to interstate transport, he designed and implemented safety and efficiency driving procedures over more than a decade. During this time he retained his involvement at Driver Training Academy; where he assisted with the continuous improvement of transport driver training. He uses a ‘motivational self-help’ approach to his training which is focused on long term safety and driving efficiency. He called his program ‘R U 4training’; it comprises a series of exercises or ‘Challenges’, each of which covers a specific driving subject.
The structure of his program caters for several demands:
- To be a tool which any driver could use to improve their knowledge, skill and ability without the aid of an instructor
- To be a means by which improvements could be made without disruption to normal work duties.
- To be a resource of exercises which professional trainers could use.
- To be a resource which companies may use to implement driver skill improvements, economically.
Given that people spend about a third of their life at work, why not put the effort into making driving, challenging, fulfilling and a vocation to be proud of.
Imagine if every week you analysed your driving with an easy-to-use measuring tool and took one driving dimension and focused on improving it. Imagine the difference that this process would make to your driving over a period of a year. Imagine if you focussed on one personal attribute a week in other areas of your career. What impact would that have on your professional development?
When you move to a higher plane of skill and knowledge your vehicle feels smoother and quieter as it operates more efficiently resulting in you feeling better about your profession. This is called an ‘intrinsic reward’ and is the motivation for further improvement. You soon have an influence on your work environment and culture which commences another cycle of good feelings and better results.
It just takes a decision. Decision + Action = Desirable results.
